A proper race car oil system will start at the engine block on the pressure side with an oil filter adapter, then through the correct fittings, lines and then the oil cooler. Accusumps are remote mounted oil reservoirs that connect and add to your to the engine's oiling system. Designed to collect pressurized oil from your engine and store it so that it may be discharged when oil pressure is low, before any impeding engine damage. Canton Racing Accusump oil accumulators deliver stored oil before starting to eliminate dry start bearing and piston scuffing (pre-oiling). Also an accumulator discharges oil during low oil pressure surges to protect against engine damage during demanding racing conditions.
Race engine oil coolers, also know as oil to air heat exchanger, have been on race cars for years and years. Oil temperature control is the primary purpose for an oil cooler, but the additional oil quantity we add to the oil system is an added benefit. Any time we increase volume, we take longer to have a temperature delta (change) effect.
Oil filter adapters either sandwich (go between) the oil filter and the engine block or replace the entire stock filter assembly in it's entirety. If you are looking for the utmost in oil temperature control and engine life, a remote filter will be your best choice. If space if limited, then a sandwich adapter may be the best way to go.
