The Girodisc system is a direct replacement for the OE disc, but a different brake pad with an annulus (pad swept area) of 66mm or less must be used. We strongly recommend the Pagid 8081. This is done to bring the weight of the disc down. The OEM rotor utilizes a pillar vane design which is horribly inefficient and, with no way of effectively dissipating heat, it heat soaks very easily. Chevrolet chose the easy solution and made the rotor extremely heavy to combat that heat. We weighed an OEM rotor at 32.5 lbs!
Girodisc took the functional route instead, engineering a shorter-annulus ring for a total rotor weight of 28.0 lbs. This design utilizes 72 directional cooling vanes for an incredibly efficient and robust package.
The necessary pad shape is very common and also found on other Camaro and Corvette applications equipped with 6 piston calipers. If there is a specific pad compound you're after please contact us directly to provide the correct part numbers.
The central hat section of the Girodisc rotor is made from strictly USA-sourced 6061-T6 aircraft specification aluminum. The disc is made from Girodisc's own proprietary cast iron, poured in the USA and machined from start to finish in house at Girodisc. The rotor utilizes a curved-vane design, developed in racing to act as a centrifugal pump forcing cool air through the disc.
The disc and hat have a floating mount system, which utilizes 12 high-strength alloy steel drive pins, manufactured in the US by Girodisc and cadmium plated for long-lasting corrosion resistance. These pins take the loads from braking while maintaining the axial and radial float between the hat and disc. They are secured by class 12.9 cap screws and hardened washers.
In order to keep the rotors from making noise when cold, the pins are mounted with anti-noise springs on the disc side, allowing the iron disc to expand as it heats up while eliminating the rattle and noise commonly associated with floating rotors. This float also allows the rotor to self center between the brake pads.
Once the Girodisc system is in place, you simply replace the cast iron discs when needed. This reduces cost over time by allowing you to re-use the aluminum central hats.
