STILO ST5 GT COMPOSITE FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ) Remember that safety is paramount in auto racing, and choosing the right helmet and maintaining it properly is essential for your protection on the track. Always consult with the professionals at Discovery Parts and refer to the manufacturer's guidelines for specific questions about your racing helmet. Why do I need a racing helmet? Auto racing helmets are designed to protect drivers from head injuries and fire during high-speed races and crashes. They are a crucial safety component in motorsports. How do I choose the right size helmet? You should measure your head's circumference using a flexible tape measure, then refer to the manufacturer's sizing chart to select the appropriate size helmet. Please review our blog posting on how to properly fit your new auto racing helmet from Discovery Parts. What safety standards should I look for in a racing helmet? Look for helmets that meet safety standards like Snell and FIA depending on your racing discipline. These standards ensure the helmet's safety and quality. DOT helmets are designed for street use and not for racing and track use. What's the difference between full-face and open-face, and helmets? Full-face helmets provide the most protection with a complete face shield, while open-face helmets cover the top and sides of the head. Can I use a motorcycle helmet for auto racing? No, motorcycle helmets do not provide the same level of protection as auto racing helmets, as they are designed for different purposes. It's recommended to use a helmet specifically designed for auto racing which includes fire protection in addition to impact protection. How often should I replace my Stilo ST5 GT Composite auto racing helmet? Auto racing helmets should be replaced every 5-10 years, depending on the manufacturer's recommendations and usage. If the helmet is involved in a crash, it should be replaced immediately. Are expensive racing helmets safer than budget ones? Safety standards dictate the minimum safety requirements, so even budget-friendly helmets can offer protection. However it’s important to consider how lower-priced helmets are meeting the required testing standards. More expensive helmets are lighter, smaller, are constructed of superior materials, and often come with additional features then less expensive helmets. How do I maintain and clean my Stilo ST5 GT Composite racing helmet? Follow the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning and maintenance. You should clean the exterior, interior and shield with the Molecule Helmet Care Kit. Do I need to wear a balaclava under my Stilo ST5 GT Composite racing helmet? Balaclavas are typically not required for Driver's Education events, however they make wearing a helmet much, much more comfortable. Balaclavas will provide fire protection (if fire rated), help keep your helmet lining clean and order free by absorbing the majority of sweat while using it, and additionally balaclavas make putting your helmet on and taking it off by protecting your ears and keeping from from folding over when you helmet is worn. Discovery Parts recommends balaclavas from Alpinestars, OMP, Sabelt, Sparco, and Stand21. If you are entering sanctioned auto racing events, balaclavas will be required for fire protection. Is the SNELL SA Rating important? The Snell SA2020 certification is a safety standard established by the Snell Memorial Foundation for auto racing helmets. It sets the criteria and requirements that helmets must meet to be considered safe and suitable for use in motorsport events. Snell SA2020 certification is highly regarded in the motorsports industry and is often required or recommended by racing organizations and events. It signifies that a helmet has passed rigorous testing to provide maximum safety for drivers in various motorsport disciplines, including road racing, NASCAR, Formula 1, drag racing, and more. It's essential for drivers to check the specific safety standards required by the racing organizations they participate in to ensure compliance. Is the FIA helmet certification important? Yes, FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile) certification is crucial for auto racing helmets, especially in the context of international motorsport events and many national and regional racing series in the USA. The FIA 8859-2015 standard is commonly associated with racing helmets used in various motorsport disciplines. Helmets certified to FIA 8859-2015 met the safety requirements set by the FIA and were widely accepted in many racing series Which helmet certification is the most stringent and the hardest to meet? The FIA 8860-2018 certification is considered the most stringent and advanced helmet certifications available for auto racing helmets, and it is often associated with top-tier motorsport categories like Formula 1. It's important to note that the FIA 8860-2018 helmets offer a high level of protection and their use is mandatory in many racing series. Drivers should always check the regulations of the racing series they intend to participate in to ensure compliance with helmet certification standards. Can I wear glasses with my Stilo ST5 GT Composite helmet? Most helmets have provisions for wearing glasses or goggles, but check the design to be sure. Most manufacturers feature helmet models with wider eye ports to better accommodate eye glasses. Are carbon fiber helmets better? Carbon fiber helmets are lightweight and strong, a top choice for racers. But remember, certification matters most. Can I use a used helmet for racing? It's best to buy a new helmet. Used helmets may have unseen damage or be out of date on safety standards. Can I buy replacement parts for my Stilo ST5 GT Composite helmet, like visors or padding? Many manufacturers offer replacement parts, including visors and padding, to extend your helmet's lifespan. How can I prevent helmet fogging during races? Anti-fog sprays and inserts are available to help keep your visor clear during races. What's the importance of proper helmet ventilation? Proper ventilation helps keep you cool and comfortable during races, reducing the risk of heat exhaustion. How do I store my Stilo ST5.1 GT Composite helmet between races? Keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and chemicals in a bag designed to store your auto racing helmet, like the Discovery Parts Evo Helmet Bag. Where can I buy a certified racing helmet? You should only buy from a professional authorized dealer who has sold thousands of helmets. You can find all the best brands at Discovery Parts online at www.discoveryparts.com or visit our retail store at Atlanta Motorsports park or at one of the hundreds of race and track day events we attend and support. Consult the professionals any time you have specific questions about your racing helmet. What is the best helmet for kart racing? The Stilo ST5 CMR kart helmet is widely considered one of the best youth karting helmets, offering premium features for serious kart racers. Why do I need a racing helmet?Auto and kart racing helmets are essential for protecting your head in high-speed accidents. They also shield against debris and, in some motorsports, fire—making them a non-negotiable safety requirement. How do I choose the right size kart racing helmet?Use a flexible tape to measure the circumference of your head just above your eyebrows and ears. Compare the measurement to Bell’s sizing chart. For more help, read our blog on how to fit your helmet properly at Discovery Parts. What safety standards should I look for in a youth kart racing helmet?Look for the FIA CMR-2016 certification for karting. It ensures your helmet meets the highest standards for impact protection and lightweight construction for younger drivers. Can I use a motorcycle helmet for kart racing? No. Motorcycle helmets lack the kart-specific certifications and features like proper ventilation and impact resistance optimized for karting. Always use a helmet rated for motorsport competition. How often should I replace my kart racing helmet?Replace your helmet every five years depending on usage and the manufacturer's guidance. If it’s been dropped, involved in an impact, or shows signs of wear, replace it immediately. Are expensive racing helmets safer than budget ones?Yes, typically. While both must meet minimum safety standards, premium helmets offer lighter materials, better fit, improved aerodynamics, and enhanced comfort, all of which impact race performance and fatigue. How do I maintain and clean my kart racing helmet?Clean the exterior and interior using a helmet-specific care product like the Molecule Helmet Care Kit. Avoid submerging the helmet or using abrasive cleaners. Visors should be cleaned gently to avoid scratching. Do I need to wear a balaclava under my kart racing helmet? While not required for all karting events, a balaclava enhances comfort, keeps your helmet liner clean, and helps wick sweat. Fire-rated balaclavas are mandatory in sanctioned auto racing and recommended for high-performance karting. Can I wear glasses with my kart racing helmet?Yes. Wide eye ports make it compatible with most prescription glasses and racing eyewear. A good fit ensures the glasses remain stable and fog-free. Are carbon fiber helmets better?Carbon fiber helmets are lighter and stronger, reducing fatigue during long races while offering excellent impact protection. They are a top choice for competitive drivers. Can I buy a used helmet for racing? It’s not recommended. Damage or degradation may not be visible, and older helmets might not meet current safety standards. Always buy new from an authorized dealer like Discovery Parts. How can I prevent helmet fogging during races?Use a visor with built-in anti-fog technology like Bell’s DSAF system, or apply an anti-fog spray or insert. Keeping your helmet well-ventilated also helps. What's the importance of proper helmet ventilation?Good ventilation helps manage heat and moisture inside the helmet, reducing fatigue and keeping you focused throughout your race. How do I store my kart racing helmet between races?Store your helmet in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Use a padded helmet bag like our Evo Helmet Bag to prevent damage during transport or storage. What is the difference between Snell K2020 and Snell-FIA CMR-2016 certifications?Snell K2020 is designed for adult karting helmets, focusing on impact protection. CMR-2016 is tailored for drivers under 15, offering a lighter helmet to reduce neck strain while maintaining safety standards. Are tear-off visors necessary for kart racing?Tear-off visors are beneficial in maintaining clear vision during races by allowing drivers to remove a dirty visor layer quickly. They are especially useful in outdoor karting where debris and dirt are common. How do I know if my helmet is still safe to use?Helmets should be inspected regularly for signs of wear or damage. If a helmet has been involved in a significant impact or shows signs of degradation, it should be replaced immediately. Kart Racing Helmet – Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Remember that safety is paramount in kart racing, and choosing the right helmet and maintaining it properly is essential for your protection on the track. Consult the professionals at any time you have specific questions about your racing helmet. What is the best helmet for kart racing? The Stilo ST5 CMR kart helmet is widely considered one of the best youth karting helmets, offering premium features for serious kart racers. Why do I need a racing helmet? Auto and kart racing helmets are essential for protecting your head in high-speed accidents. They also shield against debris and, in some motorsports, fire—making them a non-negotiable safety requirement. How do I choose the right size kart racing helmet? Use a flexible tape to measure the circumference of your head just above your eyebrows and ears. Compare the measurement to Bell’s sizing chart. For more help, read our blog on how to fit your helmet properly at . What safety standards should I look for in a youth kart racing helmet? Look for the FIA CMR-2016 certification for karting. How often should I replace my kart racing helmet? Replace your helmet every few years depending on usage and the manufacturer's guidance. If it’s been dropped, involved in an impact, or shows signs of wear, replace it immediately. Are expensive racing helmets safer than budget ones? Yes, typically. While both must meet minimum safety standards, premium helmets offer lighter materials, better fit, improved aerodynamics, and enhanced comfort, all of which impact race performance and fatigue. How do I maintain and clean my kart racing helmet? Clean the exterior and interior using a helmet-specific care product like the Molecule Helmet Care Kit. Can I wear glasses with my kart racing helmet? Yes. Wide eye ports make it compatible with most prescription glasses and racing eyewear. A good fit ensures the glasses remain stable and fog-free. Are carbon fiber helmets better? Carbon fiber helmets are lighter and stronger, reducing fatigue during long races while offering excellent impact protection. They are a top choice for competitive drivers. Can I use a used helmet for racing? It’s not recommended. Damage or degradation may not be visible, and older helmets might not meet current safety standards. Always buy new from an authorized dealer like . How can I prevent helmet fogging during races? Use a visor with built-in anti-fog technology like Bell’s DSAF system, or apply an anti-fog spray or insert. Keeping your helmet well-ventilated also helps. What's the importance of proper helmet ventilation? Good ventilation helps manage heat and moisture inside the helmet, reducing fatigue and keeping you focused throughout your race. How do I store my kart racing helmet between races? Store your helmet in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Use a padded helmet bag like our Evo Helmet Bag to prevent damage during transport or storage. What is the difference between Snell K2020 and CMR2016 certifications? Snell K2020 is designed for adult karting helmets, focusing on impact protection. CMR2016 is tailored for drivers under 15, offering a lighter helmet to reduce neck strain while maintaining safety standards. Are tear-off visors necessary for kart racing? Tear-off visors are beneficial in maintaining clear vision during races by allowing drivers to remove a dirty visor layer quickly. They are especially useful in outdoor karting where debris and dirt are common. How do I know if my helmet is still safe to use? Helmets should be inspected regularly for signs of wear or damage. If a helmet has been involved in a significant impact or shows signs of degradation, it should be replaced immediately. Additionally, helmets should be replaced every 5 years, even if no damage is visible. Can I customize my kart racing helmet? Yes, many manufacturers offer customization options for fit and aesthetics. However, any modifications should not compromise the helmet's structural integrity or safety certifications.
