Motor sports injuries have decreased in recent years, thanks to improvements in the quality of protective gear. But despite driver and industry precautions, racing is still a dangerous sport.
Exposure to a flash fire for even a few seconds can lead to serious injury or loss of life. Severe skin burns occur more often than they should because protective clothing is not properly cared for or has not been made resistant to flammable liquids.
Racing suits made from Nomex® technical fabric have extraordinary properties to protect drivers from flames and heat. Care instructions published by Nomex® manufacturer DuPont state that this unique fabric requires special care to be fully effective.
DuPont's laundering guide cautions Nomex® users that the fabric must be kept clean. "Flame resistance can be compromised by the presence of flammable contaminants on the garment, " the guide explains.
However, DuPont advises against using ordinary soaps for removing these contaminants. "Soap scums may be flammable and could adversely affect the thermal ensure safety and comfort.

High quality, Anti-fog visors shaped for the Stilo ST5 GT helmets. The Stilo ST5 series is unique in that the shield lock is located in the center position of the shield. The shield lock is released by squeezing the outboard sides together and that will then release it from the mount stud that is located in the center of the helmet. The reason for this is to "clean-up" the sides of the helmet where a side impact in a head containment seat may grab parts of the helmet. All Stilo ST5 shilds have the center release mechanism installed on it.All Stilo ST5 shields are treated with an anti-fog treatment and they do require special care. The best result we have by far is the Stilo Visor cleaner. Liberally spray the outside of the visor with the cleaner, and wipe in a single swipe with a micro fiber towel until clean and dry. If fingerprints or dirt remain, repeat as needed. A back and forth wiping motion will tend to leave lint from the rag on the visor, so the single pass works best. Repeat if necessary, but usually one pass works great.Stilo Visor Care: Do not use Windex or any glass cleaner containing ammonia, as this can harm the anti-scratch coating on the outside of the visor, and the anti-fog coating on the inside of the visor. The Shield Tech line of Nomex undergarments provides the highest level of protection and technology for comfort and breathability. The Shield Tech is homologated to the newest FIA standard 8856-2018 which provides the highest fire protection. When designing this new line of undergarments, Sparco studied the drivers seating position to ensure ultimate fit and comfort. Strategic weaving of the material produces increased breathability along with articulation.
Shield Tech uses a seamless construction with ultra-soft stretchable material. There are two different woven materials in key areas; thin stretch for comfort and mobility as well as a double perforated panels for increased breathability. The minimal seams are stitched flat with thin specialized thread for added comfort.
All Shield Tech pieces are treated with Sparco’s X-Cool treatment, which draws heat from the body surface to cool the driver. In addition to cooling the driver, X-Cool treatment has an anti-bacterial effect.
